Ethereal trumpet lines are distressed by futurist drum and bass backings to become intrusively noisy grooves poised on the cusp between the ambient and the headache-inducing. It's an impressively contemporary aesthetic, and Molvær plays beautifully, with the wow and flutter of the DJ-led accompaniment lending a touch of primitivism to the plangent tone of his horn. The obvious parallel is with Miles Davis around the time of Bitches Brew, and certainly this is equally beyond the pale for jazz purists. Two collaborations with vocalist Sidsel Endresen provide a much-needed break in hostilities.
